Club Lunch and Business ProgramOur speaker today was Tracey Fontenot, Co-Founder of Kinetic Kids. Also joining us from Kinetic Kids was Jenna Malsbury and Isabel Jones. In a nutshell it is a physical and creative activity program designed specifically for children with special needs. Their website says it best: "In 2001, Tracey Fontenot and Kacey Wernli were practicing pediatric physical therapists who saw a need. The children with special needs that they served needed more exercise. They needed motivation. They needed camaraderie. They needed the joy that comes from being part of a team. Together, Kacey and Tracey founded Kinetic Kids with just one t-ball team of 12 children. Then word got out, and the requests followed. This year, we will offer 234 sports and recreation programs to more than 2,800 children with special needs." Tracey shared that the program doesn't exclude anyone with special needs - even if there is no diagnosis. The programs are run in several areas of San Antonio, Schertz and New Braunfels. This allows the kids to participate in the same facilities as their siblings and friends and makes it easier for parents to bring them. The program is designed to not isolate the kids - they are close to family and friends. Coaches are specifically trained as well as the interns who assist the kids. Two staff members oversee every program. The program provides athletic equipment specifically designed for special needs athletes. The schedules coincide with traditional sports seasons. The kids are encouraged to be independent and participate without their parents' help. This allows the parents to spend some time together with other family members and to watch and cheer for their athletes. The programs are fee based and there are scholarships available. For more information and to donate and/or volunteer your time, visit their website HERE. Watch their heartwarming "HOME" youtube video HERE! |

Bruce SharesThe newest feature of our weekly meetings will be info that Bruce Richter will be sharing about the goals for our Club and the many things that the Club does in the community. Bruce shared about the Gold Raffle that is held every year to help benefit students with scholarships. Bruce also touched on the Shrimp Fest, which was a wildly popular event in the 1970's and 80's. It was held at the UTSA campus and was quite an undertaking. It took a lot of planning and manpower and raised a significant amount of money. Wise Club Members at that time used the money to build our local Club's Foundation which is carefully overseen by our Board Members and used to support several non-profits. The club donated a chunk of it to the Rotary International Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matched our gift. Did you know? Find out more about what Rotary International Foundation does by clicking HERE. "For the 11th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, (click on link to learn more), an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S." |
Fines and ConfessionsKen Ruiz' phone went off during the meeting so he owed a fine. Ken shared with us that for 14 long years he decided to not attend Rotary Leadership Institute. Last Saturday at last he attended Part 1! He encourages members to attend RLI to help themselves grown into better Rotarians and to help build up the Club. Brenda Jackson confessed that she is excited about doing some remodeling to her home. Ken Donoughue continues to be excited about reading at Locke Hill Elementary School's Learning Tree Program. Marlene Mattox has begun to volunteer her time to reading to the students as well!

Our wine-IQ is increasing! Joe Montagna won the opportunity to draw the 2 of Clubs to win the $275 pot. He drew the two of diamonds and felt like a "winner" when he took home a bottle of Becker Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc! Derek Matthys owned the second ticket to win a bottle of Robert Mondavi Merlot which he generously donated to the speaker today. Thank you John for not only donating wine this month but also putting so much thought into your presentations... Humor from President FredTax Humor It wasn't a big surprise that President Fred was able to find some interesting and sometimes humorous facts about the IRS and tax code: There are more words in the tax code than there are in the Bible. The tax code is about 4 million words long. The first known taxes were in Sumer (Mesopotamia) almost 5,000 years ago. They were recorded on clay cones and paid in livestock. The writing on the Rosetta Stone, a monumentally important artifact and the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, is mostly about taxes. Al Capone was a famous Chicago mobster. He was eventually brought down by agents from the Treasury Department (this was pre-IRS) who were able to prove that he was avoiding paying income tax. The IRS has more people working for it than the Federal Bureau of Investigation! Over 1 million accountants are hired each year in America to help with taxes. National What Day

Club Lunch and Business ProgramOur speaker today was Darryl Greer, the San Antonio Program Lead to Senior Planet. He has an impressive 15 years experience working in the field of Aging and Community Development in San Antonio and Latin America. Important to note is that the classes are designed to reduce the chances of social isolation and increase social engagement in older adults through the use of technology.Darryl pointed out, "aging affects everyone." Every day 10,000 are turning 65 or older. As we age the divide is getting larger. As he demonstrated with his smartphone, there is more technology in a single smartphone than was at NASA for the moon landing. Studies show that many seniors either are or feel isolated. The classes help get seasoned citizens connected not only with their families but also the community and the world. They learn how to use technology in their daily lives - how to use it. There are also courses on how to protect financial security, wellness, money management and socialization. The courses are free. The classes are funded through Humana and are a study to find the social impact on health. Thank you Darryl for speaking to us today! We enjoyed learning more about Senior Planet and the opportunity to learn more about the world of technology! For more information go to the website HERE. |

Club Lunch and Business ProgramOur Speaker today was Will Bailey, Chief Development Officer of Good Samaritan Community Services. "In 1951, guided by the parable of the Good Samaritan, members of St. Mark's and the Diocese of West Texas were called to make a difference by furthering their ministry and building a community service center in a part of San Antonio then known as the 'death triangle' because of the high infant mortality rate and the lack of access to health care," says Will. Good Sam’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for change for our neighbors to overcome generational poverty. On their 4.6 acre campus programs benefit all ages including children, seniors and families. In addition to their ministry in San Antonio, they serve neighbors in Brownsville, Wimberley, Sonora and in the upper Rio Grande Valley. Childhood development includes Early Head Start. "This is not a daycare," says Will. "They follow a curriculum." As the children age out many continue on to our preschool program “La Escuelita”. Youth Development Services include an afterschool program, Camp Good Sam, building personal assets (honesty, integrity, achievement, motivation, school engagement, responsibility, planning and decision-making etc.) They have a successful college and career program in High School that helps kids apply for college and FAFSA. Will reports that 1,185 youth in the program planned for a future beyond high school through their College and Career Readiness Programs. Last year $1.1 million in scholarships were awarded. One Good Sam Scholarship is a stipend to help with clothing and meals etc. while the students attend college. One remarkable success is a former student of the program was admitted to Notre Dame University. He became an architect and serves on the Board to "give back". Nationally recognized, their wide range of programs not only help mold the minds of youth. "The Senior Services' activities are designed to promote a holistic approach to healthy living while aging." He also shared that "this is the only nationally recognized senior citizen center in South Texas." The Center strives to "empower and change lives" says Will. To learn more, visit their website HERE! A book will be donated in honor of our speaker to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library. |

Fines and ConfessionsWell, folks, we have a higher than usual number of confessions this week... Roger Thompson confessed that he was missing his pin. Destiny Mujica confessed that she is also missing her pin. She suspects that she lost it somehow during her presentation at the Mission Trail Rotary Club. Destiny, we're very proud of your work with the Earn-A-Bike program and changing lives of children in our community! Roger Thompson, who always seems to see the funny side of life, shared a humorous story about his 2 day in the hospital for outpatient surgery. There seemed to be some confusion whether he was in ICU or a private room. The nurses were plugging in all kinds of doodads and gadgets into him... Marlene Mattox shared that she traveled to Park City Utah and went snow skiing last week. Allyson Hamlin recently celebrated another birthday so we joined in singing Happy Birthday to her. Allyson shared that she recently was promoted to a new department at Farm Bureau Bank as Director of Sales. Congratulations, Allyson! We wish you much success! Brenda Jackson's youngest grandson is two years old. He has learned two new words: "No!" and "Mine!" Brenda said they recently adopted two puppies from Pets Alive. Joe Montagna recently sold his home and is now "homeless". Ken Ruiz wanted us to know that he is in the market to purchase another car. If someone has one they are interested in selling please contact Ken. Bruce Richter shared an article in the Rotarian Magazine about the Austin Club and is impressed with their wide variety of projects. Our Club has 17 active projects that we support. In weeks to come we will cover some of the projects to learn more about them. Destiny Mujica shared that Hoffman will be having their fourth annual STEAM night - (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math). They're looking for people in the community in these fields to present to the students and share why these fields are so amazing. If you're interested in presenting please let Destiny know.

Club Lunch and Business ProgramOur Speaker, Margaret Costantino, is the Executive Director of the Center for Refugee Services which she helped co-found in 2010. She is a lifelong resident of San Antonio. By profession Margaret is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is retired from UTSA. Her former career involved assisting college students with career planning. She also taught for the Department of Counseling for 6 years. Margaret and her husband Joe have been married 49 years and are the parents of 3 adult children and 11 grandchildren all of whom live in San Antonio. Prior to World War II the US accepted refugees due to war. A lot of refugees are single parents who are raising children alone. Resettlement funding goes away in 4 - 6 months. One third of the volunteers at the Center are from refugee communities. Margaret described the struggles that refugees have living here and trying to assimilate to our culture such as learning about credit, insurance coverage, child supervision and child safety. There is a lot of support from refugees who volunteer. Currently they are trying to raise $2,000 a year to pay for translation services. In 2012 the Center awarded 115 scholarships. Since Margaret has been with the Center she has seen students get advanced degrees such as Masters Degrees and degrees in Medicine. "It's all about self sufficiency," she says. The Center has a partnership with medical school psychology students. The process of resettlement is traumatic - refugees are afraid even though they are here legally. Some refugees are survivors of torture. The Nursing School Dental School and Medical Students have formed a Clinic at St. Francis Episcopal Church - it is faculty supervised. This is important because after 4 - 6 months services for the refugees go away including health insurance. The Center's budget is $70,000 per year - all else is donations. Harun Rashid, also with the Center, works with the Burmese community. He has lived here for five years and preparing to get his U.S. citizenship. Pat Tappmeyer, also at the meeting, spoke about being known in Nepal as point of contact for the Center. She organizes pick up of donated furniture, household goods and such to make sure the refugees get what they need. Volunteers are needed due to the overwhelming number of refugees locating here. For more information visit their website HERE. The Center for Refugee Services was presented with a check from our Club as well as a customary book that will be donated in honor of our guests to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library. Thank you for speaking to our Club today and for educating us about the Center for Refugee Services and the services that are provided. Ken Donoughue pointed out that locally there is also a service called the Faith Based Initiative whose focus and vision is “To facilitate relational collaboration, active partnerships and networked services between the San Antonio faith community, government agencies, non-profit organizations and community groups towards improving the lives of families and communities in need.” There is currently a waiting list for resources. Umbrella TimeKen Ruiz owns the umbrella for January and February. Ken was grateful to family and friends who shared the time with him last meeting for his induction into the Club. This was a meaningful time for him to return to the original Club where his Rotary life began. He gave our guest today, Matt Sheehan, an "End Polio Now" tile. He explained the focus and effort that Rotary Internal has to end polio worldwide. Remembering Ted Harwood Ken reminisced about Rotarian and friend Ted Harwood. Ted and his business partner Dan Hill were Veterinarians. Ken was 24 years old when he joined Oak Hills Rotary. Ted made fun of Ken's New York accent and Ken took his kidding in stride. Ken shared the good time he and his kid brother had when Ted's business partner took them fishing. Someone shared, "Ted was an Aggie". Bil Trodlier shared, "Ted was a good guy." Fred shared that "Ted was soft spoken." Joe said, "Ted was a rancher." Ted is leaving a legacy in the history of our Club - so many friendships - and will long be remembered. We are forever grateful. |

Club Lunch and Business ProgramBarry Abrams introduced our speakers today: Mary Beth Fisk, CEO and Executive Director and Lejla Cenanovic, Special Projects Coordinator of The Ecumenical Center. As you all know, our Club has a long standing relationship with the Center thanks to our own Club member Barry Abrams who sits on the Board at the Center. Mary Beth shared that the Center was charted in 1967 with three clergy with the dream of providing struggling families a place of healing and support. She shared that all people are welcomed at the Center and no one is ever refused services. Last year the Center provided services to 24,000 people (12,000 of them children). All insurances are accepted, including Medicare. Mary Beth touched on the Center's response to the Sutherland Springs tragedy. "The Center was on-site within hours to provide immediate comfort and support." The Center's support goes beyond the immediate need after such a tragedy. The Center soon began offering services at the River Oaks Church, First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs and subsequent plans to open at a La Vernia location. Mary Beth said "the mission of the Center is to break the stigma of mental health." Lejla shared with us stories that come from art therapy. Children were given masks and asked to paint the outside of the mask how the child feels they look on the outside (to friends, family) - then paint the inside of the mask how they really feel. She said it's very moving to see how dark and sad the children can feel. This is just one of the ways children are helped at the Center since children can't always verbalize how they are feeling. The Center is continues to grow and build at its location on 8310 Ewing Halsell Drive. Their phone number is 210-616-0885. For those who were not at the meeting we still have some of the Center's folders and they contain brochures of the impressive and broad range of programs offered such as: The Center for Treating the Whole Warrior, The Center for Children & Families, The Center for Psychological Testing and Assessment, The Center for Positive Parenting, Life after Loss and many, many more......For more information please visit their website HERE. If you have not had the opportunity to visit the Center we invite you to do so. It is a beautiful place and be sure to walk around the peaceful garden that contains the tree that we planted! Look for another meeting that will be held at the Center soon. As a token of our appreciation, a book will be given in honor of our Speakers to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library. We awarded a check today to The Ecumenical Center as our continued commitment to support the Center's many services to people in need in and around the San Antonio area. We wish the Center's continued success and may you continue to help heal individuals and families who have been affected by tragedy and life's circumstance. Thank you for coming today and sharing with us.

Club Lunch and Business ProgramBrenda Jackson introduced today’s speaker, Christa Gregory of the American Heart Association. She heads up the Little Hats Big Hearts program. This program began in 2014 in 1 hospital and gave out 300 hats to families with children diagnosed with congenital heart defects. In this past campaign in 10 hospitals, 3,000 hats will be given. This campaign wants to raise awareness of congenital heart disease in babies. Here is a picture of the hat with letter enclosed that will go to a mom before they leave the hospital. Money from sponsorships pay for CPR kits for new moms. All babies are now screened for heart disease before they leave the hospital. The Heart Walk is scheduled for May in New Braunfels and November in San Antonio. Another campaign, Go Red for Women, has its luncheon Thurs Feb 7 at the Witte Museum. The Heart Walk is in April. A book will be donated to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library on behalf of our speaker today. Thank you Christa for being our speaker today and sharing all the good things that the American Heart Association is doing to educate us on being heart healthy! Please come and join us again soon! |
Fines and ConfessionsBrenda Jackson celebrated her birthday last week. Their oldest grandson, Fin just turned 4 and he sang "Happy Birthday" to her in German. She shared that he loves to play with Legos. Mary Denton and her husband Pat McGuyer volunteered to judge at the Kendall County Robotics Competition last Saturday. There were students from Austin, Boerne, San Antonio and other cities competing. It was certainly an eye opening experience to learn how students prepare and compete. Three judges were former members of the KCRC and were instrumental in assisting the volunteer judges in the finer points of qualification. Mary was delighted to find that there is a STEM program at Harlandale High School where she graduated. Mary and Pat hope to volunteer again next year! |

Rotary MinuteBruce Richter shared with us an article in the February 2019 issue of the Rotarian Magazine called about "People of Action Around the Globe." CROATIA: Since 2014 over 350 Rotaractors from around the world have sailed the North Adriatic Sea on annual weeklong trips in 6 tiny ships. Bruce and Gloria traveled to Croatia as our International Ambassadors. He said that Croatia has lots of snow and rocky terrain. It is a walled city with walls dating back 600 years. The rock goes out to the Adriatic Sea. It is on these beaches where Rotaractors work, cleaning and raising money benefiting youth and victims of flooding in Bosnia. A total of $8,500 has been raised over the years. You can read more about this project in the February Rotarian Magazine by clicking HERE!

Club Lunch and Business ProgramLarrisa Wilkinson is the Director of Professional Learning and Program Innovation at Pre-K 4 SA. Larrisa and her team are responsible for leading efforts to distinguish the program as a high-quality model for early childhood educational excellence throughout San Antonio and the nation, through city-wide professional development, grants, family engagement and the program's four demonstration sites serving 2,000 four-year olds. Beginning with the vision of former Mayor Julian Castro and what was then named the 'Brainpower Taskforce,' they recommended the development of a program focused on high-quality prekindergarten services for four-year old children. In just a few years since its inception, in 2017 Pre-K 4 SA was honored with the prestigious H-E-B Excellence in Education Award in early childhood education for its social-emotional development curricula in the North and South centers. The purpose of Pre-K 4 SA is to improve San Antonio in one generation by changing the education trajectory of four-year-olds, inspiring students to develop a love of learning and become engaged, 21st century citizens. The program has eight participating school districts and serves 2000 students each year at four Education Centers. Larrisa shared with us that Volunteer Opportunities are available! Umbrella TimeKen Ruiz owns the umbrella for January and February. At first Ken said that he was "speechless" and it was clear that no one believed him. He said that he joined Oak Hills Rotary Club in 1988 and President Fred was his accountant. He shared that whenever he is asked how he is doing he always answers: "I'm blessed." He feels that response has an impact on people's heart and soul. "Rotary is a blessing," he said. This month he was diagnosed with epilepsy, a cognitive disorder. He shared that when he left San Antonio and move to Florida he was leaving "the best Rotary Club" and had no desire to join another Club. As it would happen, he would cross the path of Past District Governor Frank Devlin. It seemed that there was still work to be done in Rotary for Ken so he joined the Westin Rotary Club in Florida and eventually became President. He says "there is power in wearing the Rotary pin." |

Club Lunch and Business ProgramWe didn't know what to AXE-pect with today's speaker. Sarah Fleming, GM of Class AXE Room Escape shared with us about this new form of entertainment. Sarah was armed not only with 2 actual axes but also good sense of humor and an abundance of puns. The AXE Room Escape is located behind Sunset Station at Houston St. & Chestnut. Reservations are recommended. It is a range where the participants are taught how to throw an axe at a target. Sarah shared with us that this is more for entertainment rather than competition. Many companies use this venue as a team building exercise. Cost is $32 for an 1-1/2 hour experience and it is BYOB. Sarah offered share her AXE-perienced throwing technique to one of our members. Rick Tarbell gamely volunteered...AXE-dently I believe....We are AXE-ually relieved to report that no axes were actually thrown during this demonstration and we were not in fear for our lives. They are trained to smell cortisol and adrenaline transmitters triggered when the Vet is experiencing a PTSD episode. The Vets learn how to train their service dog which ensures the Vet's future with another dog if the time comes when their dog dies or has to be retired. Many times he Vet can lead a productive life with less or no drugs with their possible side effects with their trained service dog. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, 22 Vets diagnosed with PTSD commit suicide a day. Since many times the dogs the service dogs were once in a shelter, the lives of both the dog and Vet are saved. TADSAW provides service dogs at no cost and no application fee to the Vet because "it's an honor and a privilege to serve you. You defended our country." The service dog improves the Vet's quality of life and allows them to live independently. The trained service dog gives the Vet hope and a future. Humor from President FredAdvice for Anyone Moving to Texas Save all bacon grease. You will be instructed later how to use it. If you do run your car into a ditch, don’t panic. Four men in the cab of a four wheel drive with a 12-pack of beer and a tow chain will be along shortly. Don’t try to help them. Just stay out of their way. This is what they live for. Remember: “Y’all” is singular. “All y’all” is plural. “All y’all’s” is plural possessive. Get used to the phrase “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”. And the collateral phrase “You call this hot? Wait’ll August.” Don’t tell us how you did it up there. Nobody cares. A Mercedes-Benz is not a status symbol, a Chevy, Dodge, or Ford is. If someone says they’re “fixin” to do something, that doesn’t mean anything’s broken. The value of a parking space is not determined by the distance to the door, but the availability of shade is. If you see a slower moving vehicle on a two lane road pull onto the shoulder that is called “courtesy”. BBQ is a food group. It does NOT mean grilling burgers and hot dogs outdoors. Everything is better with Ranch dressing. “Bless your Heart” is a nice way of saying you’re an idiot. Christmases PastPresident Fred invited us to share our most memorable Christmas and New Year's Eve stories. Fred remembered when he was young going to his grandmother's home in Mark, Texas near Waco. The house had no indoor plumbing and no heat! He said that they slept under many warm blankets. Gloria shared that her mom had a different take on things: One year she left their Christmas tree up and changed the decorations with the seasons. One year she found 3 tumbleweeds and had the inspiration to spray paint them and add glitter! She sounds like an interesting person.... Stuart's dad was in the military and they lived in England and several states so their family wasn't always closeby. They enjoyed many Christmases with their small family. He said that he and his brother always looked to see where the gifts were hidden... Gloria shared another memory: she and her brother always found their gifts prior to Christmas. One particular year her brother was going to receive a .22 gun and a portable radio and Gloria was to receive a record player. The gun went off and went through the radio and lodged into the record player! Her brother then said "Quick! Put them back!" to which Gloria replied, "They're gonna know..." Marlene told us about one year she and her husband took down their own Christmas tree and loaded it into her husband's company Frito truck so they could take it and then put it back up for the family Christmas.... Joe said that one year he went to Seattle for Christmas just to see the snow - it didn't snow. However one of his children got hurt so he spent time in the ER.... Brett shared that he always set up his Lionel Train around the Christmas tree. In the background the Percy Faith Christmas Special played on their black and white TV.... Brett also shared that while at a masquerade ball in New York during the Y2K Millenium Crisis, he observed an SAPD sniper on the rooftop... Ken D. shared that he grew up in New York and there was no shortage of snow. He remembers street vendors hawking their wares of fruits and vegetables and also vendors that sharpened knives... Ken spent New Years Eve in Times Square and watched the ball drop...it wasn't as crowded with people then... Brenda shared the time at the time of their oldest son's first Christmas they flew to Virginia to visit family. The family went out to eat and Brenda & Charles' son was doing his cute baby things and this man walked up to compliment them about their son.... the man's name was John Wayne.... Barry shared about the year he celebrated New Years Eve twice...once in New York and again in San Francisco! He was flying, returning home from Viet Nam... Bil shared his first Christmas - ever - after he married Linda. Bil did not grown up celebrating Christmas and Linda did. There were many more stories told - hope you enjoyed reading these - we celebrate everyone's memories! Thank you, everyone, for sharing with us!

Rotary Minute by Bruce RichterBruce continues to share interesting articles from The Rotarian Magazine In the January 2019 issue he found this and wanted to share: Clean Out of Excuses The writer, Paul Engleman, wrote about his 86 year old mother in law who moved from the Wisconsin farm where she had lived for 40 years to a smaller house 15 miles away. Many family members pitched in to help. The writer's son was alarmed at the quantity of "treasures" that had been collected and whispered, "Please, don't let this happen to you and Mom." In this poignant story, which strikes a little close to most of our homes, Paul takes stock of all the "things" that he and his wife have collected including outdated items and that long outlived their usefulness. He didn't know where to begin - so his research began - on the internet! He was overwhelmed with tips. He decided to start with the "current world champion of decluttering" (did you know there was such a title?), Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. Furthering his quest on where to begin decluttering, Paul was surprised to discover MakeSpace, a website that calls itself "your closet in the cloud" and whose business model is mostly about shifting clutter: "We'll pick up your stuff, store it in our secure storage facility, and create an online photo catalog of it so you never forget what you have in storage." For more of Paul's humorous and sometimes painfully truthful insights on decluttering, Click Here to read the entire article! Bruce shared a story about his brother who, when being transferred to an assisted living facility, the family needed to put their hands on an insurance policy and had some trouble finding it. He recommended that we all make a plan so that our loved ones know where important documents are stored so that they can be accessed when needed. He and Gloria have already implemented their plan.

Hidden Hero Bruce RichterDistrict Governor Dr. Kathryn Hubbard presented the "Hidden Hero Award" to our own Bruce Richter. Bruce was honored today because he has been our long time "go to" person. He works tirelessly for our Club to lead, organize, research, serve on committees, create slide shows, run the AV for our meetings, fill in for the current Secretary and Treasurer, make presentations during our meetings, provide humor, volunteer for service projects, organize and deliver donations to the Girl Scout Headquarters' Daisy Pantry, deliver books to Haven for Hope and who knows what else? Bruce and Gloria have been our Rotarian Ambassadors around the world for many years making it a point to visit Rotary Clubs wherever they travel and bringing back pictures and stories to share with us! Bruce said that he has been a Rotarian for 40 years. His positive attitude, good nature and heart of service are a perfect reflection of what a Rotarian should look like. We all appreciate you Bruce and we're so glad that you're here! Wishing you many more years of good health and ability to serve for as long as you wish!

HumorAs a change of pace, Brett Ward provided humor for today's meeting. We may know that a group of cows is called a "herd" and a group of sheep a "flock" or "herd" and a group of chickens a "flock" and puppies a "litter". Did you also know that a group of squirrels is called a "dray" or "scurry", hedgehogs a "prickle", mice a "mischief", foxes, "skulk", cats "clowder"? President Fred didn't say it out loud but he was thinking that a group of Rotarians at any given time could be called a "clowder" or "scurry". You may draw your own conclusions....

District Governor SpeaksAfter our tour of the facility, President Fred turned the meeting over to District Governor Dr. Kathryn Hubbard who we all know as Kathy. Kathy reviewed the history of our Club, our ongoing projects, the successes that we have achieved and the future of our Club. She talked about our Club's beginnings, charted in 1977 beginning with 35 members and grew to a high of 90 members during our history. The Club was originally sponsored by the San Antonio Rotary Club. The Club's history includes the wildly successful Shrimp Fest held at UTSA for 15 years beginning in 1989. During these events the Club sold 500 tickets making $30,000. The Shrimp Fest then moved to Helotes and was held there for 5 or 6 years. Currently the Club is working on a merger with Med Center Rotary Club. Kathy recommends completion of the merger by the end of December because of RI dues. She reminded us the Rotary Day is March 23. She proposed that we plan a project for that day. She stated that "Success in planning is key." Her thought provoking challenge to us was, "Would our community notice if our Club left?" She shared with us that donations to Rotary Foundation may be made thru myrotary.org and can be made as a direct donation. She was excited to announce the Million Dollar Dinner planned for January 2020. More information will be shared when it becomes available. She asked if we had considered applying for a District Grant. District grants fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in our community and communities abroad. Each district chooses which activities it will fund with these grants. She touched on the tragedy of human trafficking. Our Club featured two speakers within the year who shared this reality with us. She mentioned the community service of the San Antonio West Rotary Club member Chief Master Sergeant Dwayne Hopkins (Ret.), currently the Executive Director of Fisher House. He was a recent speaker with our Club with his though provoking "Why you should be a Rotarian". Thanks to our District Governor and Assistant District Governor we were all inspired and challenged to get involved in our community. We appreciate their leadership and look forward to seeing them again at our meetings in the future!

Welcome!Welcome to the Oak Hills Rotary Club’s website. Hopefully, you will find it useful and informative. We meet on Wednesdays at 11:45 am at the Outback Steakhouse, 12511 IH-10 West, San Antonio, Texas 78230 United States Rotary is a community service group of business people focused on the needs of their community. Rotary has been around for well over 100 years, starting in February 1905. The place was Chicago, IL. Paul Harris, an attorney, met with three other local businessmen to discuss improving the business relationships in Chicago. They would “rotate” their periodic meetings between their businesses as they expanded the discussion and brought others businessmen into the meeting. They became organized and incorporated other ideas as they grew. A second club was formed in San Francisco in 1908 with a few more clubs following elsewhere in the United States, one of which was here in San Antonio. In 1911 Rotary became international with the establishment of a club in Canada. Today there are 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 34,000 clubs in over 165 countries. Each club supports programs in their community, state, nation, and throughout the world. Since 1986, Rotary International has been a major force responsible for the near eradication of Polio worldwide and we have been joined by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization in this effort over the last several years. Our Club contributes to the Polio Plus foundation each year. Oak Hills Rotary Club was chartered in October 1977 and we took our name from the original meeting place, the Oak Hills Country Club and have been a community leader in our area from the beginning. Our primary philanthropy is to support Child Hunger Programs, Youth Education Programs, and Regional & International Programs. Please review the Photo Album portion of this Web Page to gain an understanding of our community interface. Oak Hills Rotary Club meets most Wednesdays at noon for an hour of fellowship and fun. We take the work we do seriously but not ourselves. Come have lunch with us and learn how you can support the San Antonio and International Community. |
Club AnnouncementsAt our Special Board Meeting last Saturday, the Board arrived at a formula for Scholarships. The only change is the weight of financial need in the equation. The Downtown Club has invited other Rotary Clubs to join in Rotary Day SA on March 23 for a clean up day at Brackenridge Park. Last year six clubs and 130 people worked together at McAlister Park. So put this on your calendar - it will be a great day to meet other Rotarians and people in the community while helping to beautify this historic park! We're glad to see Ken Donoughue back after out patient surgery. Please keep James Daniel in your prayers. He had surgery on his thyroid on Monday to remove a nodule which fortunately was benign. He sent the Board an email on Monday to thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers and to let us know that he is doing well. |
