Lunch and Business Program
Vice President John Legris introduced the program speaker, Benjamin Youngblood.  He gave the club some background on Mr. Youngblood stating that Mr, Youngblood practices in the following areas:

  • Corporate Law
  • Real Estate Law
  • Family Law and several other areas
Mr. Youngblood, we were told, is a member of the Edwards Aquifer Board and is a member of the faculty at St. Mary's Law School. He has been in the practice of law for 40 years. Mr. Youngblood spoke to the club on the importance of having a will. He told us that the cost to probate an estate with a will in Texas is about $1,500 vs the cost to probate an estate without a will is about $4,500. He informed us that it is very important to at least have 4 documents:

  • Will
  • Durable Power of Attorney
  • Medical Power of Attorney
  • "Living Will": a declaration to the physician

He gave us an explanation of each document and the reasons to have them. He provided information on some other documents to consider.

  • Declaration of Disposition of Remains
  • Trusts in a Will and External Trust
  • Trusts for Special Needs Children
  • Guardianships

He informed us that a handwritten will is legal in Texas and must be 100% in the person's handwriting. He informed us that the time to probate an estate without a will can take as long as 4 years. Mr. Youngblood then answered questions.

President Rick thanked Mr. Youngblood for his presentation and presented him with a book with his name in it which will be donated to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library.

As is our tradition we will donate a book in honor of our speakers to the Locke Hill Elementary School library.
