Senior Wedding at the Villages in Florida Two very active seniors (Jacob, age 92, and Mariam, age 89), living at 'The Villages' in Florida, are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass a drugstore and they decide to go in. Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?" The pharmacist answers, "Yes." Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?" Pharmacist: "Of course we do." Jacob: "Medicine for circulation?" Pharmacist: "All kinds." Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?" Pharmacist: "Definitely." Jacob: "How about suppositories and medicine for impotence?" Pharmacist: "You bet!" Jacob: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis and Alzheimer's?" Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works." Jacob: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for Parkinson's disease?" Pharmacist: "Absolutely." Jacob: "Everything for heartburn and indigestion?" Pharmacist: "We sure do." Jacob: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?" Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes." Jacob: "Adult diapers?" Pharmacist: "Sure, how can I help you?" Jacob: "We'd like to use this store as our Bridal Registry." Destiny Mujica confessed that she missed a lot of meetings while working on the Earn a Bike Christmas 2018 project. President Fred invited Destiny to share with us about the 2018 project. She said that 500 students from 7 campuses were contacted - 300 registered and 200 students showed up to the event. This was the biggest event to date. The program begins in September and the program runs for 8 weeks. The students learn about bicycle safety and maintenance.The program requires improved attendance and decreased negative behaviour. The schools involved benefit with improved performance metrics. She also shared that grants are necessary to support the program. Several grants were awarded due to Destiny's grant writing skills. Destiny shared that the current Executive Director, Christian is stepping down to focus on his for profit business and that she has been approved as the new Executive Director.
The umbrella for January & February is owned by Ken Ruiz, a former member of our club. He brought his New Member book when he joined Oak Hills Rotary. He shared the story of the beginning of our club: "On October 27, 1977, Jack Davis of Hamilton Bermuda, signed the official charter for the San Antonio Oak Hills Rotary Club. W. Jack Davis, serving as President of Rotary International, through a stroke of his pen, officially declared that the San Antonio Oak Hills Rotary Club was a member club of Rotary International and that the individuals listed on the charter could henceforth be call "Rotarians."" "The accomplishments of this club have made a difference in the community, in the member's vocations, and in various parts of the world." Ken gave paperweights for everyone with End Polio Now tiles set in travertine.
We didn't know what to AXE-pect with today's speaker. Sarah Fleming, GM of Class AXE Room Escape shared with us about this new form of entertainment. Sarah was armed not only with 2 actual axes but also good sense of humor and an abundance of puns. The AXE Room Escape is located behind Sunset Station at Houston St. & Chestnut. Reservations are recommended. It is a range where the participants are taught how to throw an axe at a target. Sarah shared with us that this is more for entertainment rather than competition. Many companies use this venue as a team building exercise. Cost is $32 for an 1-1/2 hour experience and it is BYOB. Sarah offered share her AXE-perienced throwing technique to one of our members. Rick Tarbell gamely volunteered...AXE-dently I believe....We are AXE-ually relieved to report that no axes were actually thrown during this demonstration and we were not in fear for our lives.
