The meeting opened with the ringing of the bell by President Rick Tarbell. Ken Donoughue let us with the prayer and the pledge today. President Rick recognized our friends, regular visiting Rotarian Dave Jower and club member candidate, Glenda Spears.  Also our speaker and guests: Dr. Richard Drake and members of his team, Dr. Jeffrey Paz and Dr. Stephen Yarborough with Dr. Drake's Sleep Solutions.

Ken Donoughue reminded us that the next Rotary Leadership Institute will be Sept 14 at Spring Creek United Methodist Church in Fair Oaks. For more information and/or to register online click HERE!  Ken Donoughue, James Daniel, Ken Ruiz and Mary Denton agree that anyone and everyone benefits from attending! Not only the individual but also the entire club.

Ken Donoughue says that the Learning Tree reading program begins next week! You must have a background check prior to volunteering. For more information and to register please visit their website HERE!

Ken Donoughue shared with us Pathways to Hope will be held this Thursday & Friday Aug 23 & 24 at the Tobin. Sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness in San Antonio among other well known sponsors. The effort is being facilitated by the faith community and by organizations throughout the city that work to improve mental health care, provide services, educate our students, provide social services, and many others.  It is truly a community wide effort. For more information click HERE!.
Lunch and Business Program
Our speaker today is Dr. Richard Drake. Also with us are Dr. Jeffrey Paz and Dr. Stephen Yarborough. All are on Dr. Drake's Sleep Solutions team. Dr. Drake and his team are the guests of Allyson Hamlin who was not at the meeting today. Dr. Drake called Allyson out on this one and feels that she owes a fine....

Dr. Drake estimated that about 10 of our members in attendance today may have sleep apnea. Dr. Drake has a lighthearted approach to this serious condition. Interestingly he said that some may have sleep apnea and not even know it.  Sleep apnea affects memory, stress levels, and puts people in a bad mood.  We all need sleep!  What happens when someone who has sleep apnea and is trying to get some rest, the airway closes down and they may not get the restorative rest they need.  Sleep apnea gets worse with age. Dr. Drake shared a lot of information about this condition including clinical signs & symptoms of OSA:  Snoring intermittent with pauses, excessive daytime sleepiness, awakenings with gasping or choking, fragmented, non-refreshing, light sleeping, poor intellect, clunded memory, irritability, mood swings, impotence and headaches among many other symptoms.

For more information please visit the website HERE!

As is our tradition we will donate a book in honor of our speakers to the Locke Hill Elementary School library.

Thank you Ken Donoughue for donating books for this month!
    Show Low Raffle
Vice President John Legris introduced this week's wines, both from Spain: Pata Negra Verdejo (white) and Pata Negra Valdepenas (red). John describes the red as "excellent" and the white "refreshing".  Veronica Ruse owned the first ticket drawn and the chance to win the $800 pot. Instead of drawing the 2 of clubs to win, she drew the queen of hearts!  As a consolation prize, she chose the red wine.  Gloria Richter owned the second ticket and took home the white.

Mary Denton donated the wine for the month of August.

    Umbrella Time
There was no umbrella time this week due to Ken Ruiz' absence. His winning bid for the umbrella goes towards his Paul Harris Fellowship.  He is also fine free as long as he owns the umbrella.

    Fines and Confessions
August is in full swing and our members had a lot to talk about!

Destiny Mujica is expecting a new little Rotarian!  She's doing "great" and just had her 20 week sonogram. She is expecting a girl and is considering naming her Judith or Julianne.

Roger Thompson's phone went off so he paid a fine.

Gloria Richter's pride showed when she bragged that today is her granddaughter Madison Martinez' first day at Sam Houston State University.

Mary Denton and husband Pat travelled to Oklahoma last week for the funeral of his beloved uncle George.  Uncle George was 100 years (100 and a half as Uncle George said...) when he passed.  He was a WWII vet and was a mechanic for the world famous Flying Tigers! Also, Pat had a successful surgery and is recovering well. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

    Getting Started with Square
The OHRC Board approved the proposal for the use of a MagStrip reader that will allow members to use a debit or credit card for making payments. We are hoping that this will make it easier for those who don't normally carry cash.

Until we familiarize ourselves with this new device and the process, for a while at least please continue to bring cash or checks.
