Rotarians are helping during the COVID-19 crisis!
Ken Donoughue was absent during this week's meeting.  However he continues to help feed needy children and the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic in connection with the Pleasanton Rotary Club.

Brenda Jackson is serving the community during the COVID-19 outbreak through her nursing profession and is unable to attend regular meetings. We commend you Brenda with the work that you are doing to support the community!

If anyone else from our club is assisting the community in any way during the COVID-19 crisis please let me know.  We would like to recognize your service in the community.

Prayer and Pledge
President Rick Tarbell opened the meeting and led us with a word of prayer and the pledges.

Club Lunch and Business Program
President Rick Tarbell introduced our guest speaker today, Karen Ryan from A Ransomed Life, a non-profit organization. A Ransomed Life is a healing community for sexually exploited youth in our area. It was interesting to learn that the majority human trafficking victims in the US are US citizens. The majority of victims that A Ransomed Life assists live in Texas and are not from other areas. Victims are lured by any app with video and chat features - that is where predators gain access.  A list of most dangerous apps HERE. Victims are harmed physically psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Many develop unhealthy patterns to escape the pain. As a general rule, buyers (or customers) are college educated, married and have children.  A Ransomed Life is funded by in part by various grants, and the Bexar County Juvenile Justice system. Prevention is key – we need to make our young people too wise to fall victim. They have a program available to present to groups that are suitable for students ages 11 to 17 to educate them about the dangers of this crime. A Ransomed Life is available to speak to any organization such as homeowners associations, Bible clubs, PTA meetings etc. To find out more and to learn how you can help click HERE!  Presentation notes are available HERE.

A Ransomed Life is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and 100% of your donation is tax-deductible. Donations may be made through their website.

Additionally, we learned there is a cause oriented Rotary Club with a focus on "Rotary action group against slavery".  This will be a virtual club and will have members from around the world! It is our understanding that it is possible to be a member of a cause oriented club as well as be able to maintain membership in our home Rotary Club. More information will be shared about these new Rotary clubs as it becomes available.

Thanks to Karen and her team for spending some time with us and for speaking to our club!  Please join us "in person" when we start meeting again at Outback Steakhouse!

Speaker Next Week

Fred's Humor
Past President Fred Timmons shared this one:

I was in a long line at 7:45 am today at the grocery store that opened at 8:00 for seniors only.  A young man came from the parking lot and tried to cut in at the front of the line, but an old lady beat him back into the parking lot with her cane. He returned and tried to cut in again but an old man punched him in the gut, then kicked him to the ground and rolled him away.

He returned once more, somewhat disheveled and said, “If you don’t let me unlock the door, you will never get in!”

Umbrella Time
Mary Denton owns the umbrella this month.  She used her time this week to pay honor the recent loss of our long time member Gloria Duke Richter.  Mary asked that members call Bruce and or write notes to express their love and care. Mary's winning bid goes towards her Paul Harris Fellowship.

Fun Facts from Wine History
President Elect John Legris presented a new feature on "Know Your Grapes."  Red grapes: thrive in moderate to warm climates. They need a bit longer to ripen and develop flavor than white grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most planted grape varieties because it can thrive in a wide area. John said he and Chihiro are enjoying a wine with an unusual name: Steak and Potatoes Cabernet Sauvignon from California.

No Show Low Drawing Today
We anxiously await the Show Low drawing as soon as our club is able to meet at the Outback Steakhouse!

Announcements
Past President Fred Timmons had expressed interest in becoming Treasurer in the future, and asked he would consider taking over sooner like in June, he has graciously agreed to step in as Treasurer and continue into next year and as Buzz Lightyear would say, "to infinity and beyond." We don’t know exactly how long Stuart Dudley has been Treasurer of the club and also our Foundation, so forever how many years it has been, Thanks!

President Rick and President Elect John Legris met last week with Jo Ann Browne of the Northwest Rotary Club and the restaurant owner of the Outback Steakhouse. They came away with ideas of how tables could be arranged to facilitate fellowship and also serving meals.  More details to come.

Ken Ruiz says his previous club in Weston Florida will have their draw down on Thursday June 4 at 6:00 pm. It will be held virtually. Look for it on the Rotary Club of Weston facebook page.
