This Day in History

  • Disneyland, Walt Disney’s metropolis of nostalgia, fantasy, and futurism, opens on July 17, 1955. The $17 million theme park was built on 160 acres of former orange groves in Anaheim, California, and soon brought in staggering profits. Today, Disneyland hosts more than 14 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion.
  • On July 17, 2014 halfway through a flight from Amsterdam to Malaysia, a passenger plane was shot down over the war-torn Ukraine-Russia Border. All 298 people on board, most of whom were citizens of the Netherlands, died in the explosion.

Moonwalk 50th Anniversary
Fred Timmons reminded us of the 50th anniversary of the historic moonwalk! On July 20 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin earned their place in history in our race to outer space. You can read Forbes facts & figures behind the $152 Billion Moon Landing by clicking HERE!

Pass the Hat proceeds go to Earn-A-Bike
Umbrella Time
Ken Ruiz owns the umbrella this month. His donation goes towards his Paul Harris Fellowship and he is fine free during the month he owns the umbrella!

He led us in this cheer: "I'm alert! I'm alive! I feel great!"

Ken is actively engaged in organizing the 2019 Gold Raffle. He says that we need music and a wine sponsor for 4 cases of wine. Fred Timmons said that Myron's has promised to sponsor the food.

Lunch and Business Program
Awarding scholarships to three very deserving students was our program today!  Barry Abrams, Scholarship Chair, introduced the students:

Lana Al-Hamaydeh was in the top 5% of her class at Clark High School. She was a member of the Interact Club for 4 years. She feels Interact is “not an obligation but a passion.”  Among her favorite memories are volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and Blessings in a Backpack. She has been accepted to the University of Texas at San Antonio and will major in biochemistry. She hopes to become a pediatric dentist.

Rachel Lee was in the top 2% of her class at Clark High School.  She was a member of the Interact Club for 4 years and was the president this year. One of her favorite memories is volunteering for Haven for Hope. She is enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin with a major in biochemistry. She hopes to go on to med school.

Alejandro Moncada graduated from the International School of the Americas. He was active in the Interact Club for 4 years and was president the last 3 years. His energy attracted students to volunteer for service. Hours of volunteer service doubled under his leadership since Interact began at ISA. He feels the 120 hours of volunteer service to graduate is “not enough.” His passion is to start a Rotaract Club at college. He is enrolled at The University of the Incarnate Word will major in music education.

Clark Interact Sponsor Margie Sensiba was one of our guests today. She thanked our club for supporting college bound Interact students. The Clark Interact Club meets the second Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
If you are interested in attending a meeting please ask President Rick for more information.

Barry Abrams announced that this is his last year as Scholarship Chair. We want to thank you, Barry, for all your hard work for so many years. Your passion for these young Interact Students is infectious! He also announced that James Daniel has accepted the nomination to be the next Scholarship Chair.

We commend our students today for all your hard work and for being leaders to your classmates! Thank you for coming and for bringing your family members today!  You have a bright future ahead of you. We will be encouraging you every step of the way!

As is our tradition we will donate a book in honor of our scholarship recipients to the Locke Hill Elementary School library.

    Gold Raffle Ticket Update
President Rick says that tickets will be available next week!

President Rick encourages us to display the Rotary decal on our car. This will help identify us as Rotarians and could start a conversation that might lead someone to wanting to attend a meeting!  We have decals available at our hospitality table at all meetings.
    Show Low Raffle
For the show low raffle today the inimitable John Legris introduced us to Chateau Haut Pougnan Bordeaux from France. He also introduced a wine called Dr. Beckermann Rheinhessen Auslese from Germany.  Glenda Spears won the opportunity to draw the 2 of clubs hoping to win the $675 pot today.  Unfortunately she drew the 8 of clubs.  She said "since I'm from Germany I'll choose the Auslese."  Bil Trodlier owned the second ticket drawn and took home the Bordeaux.
