30th Annual Gold Raffle Oct 23!
Ken Ruiz says everything is ready for our 30th Annual Gold Raffle October 23! Be sure to call everyone that purchased a ticket from you to see who is coming - let Ken know! The Mini of San Antonio is arranging for us to have plenty of parking space. "Get there early!" suggested Ken - club members will start working at 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm to get everything ready. Fred Timmons announced that one of our sponsors, Myron's Steakhouse is donating $25 gift cards to everyone who has purchased a Gold Raffle Ticket!

Prayer, Pledge and Visitors
The meeting opened with the ringing of the bell by President Rick Tarbell. Ken Ruiz led us with a prayer and the pledge. Vice President John Legris introduced our speaker Leticia De La Rosa of Palo Alto College, Martha Trevino and friend of our club Dave Jauer

  • On Oct. 16, 1962, the Cuban missile crisis began as President John F. Kennedy was informed that reconnaissance photographs had revealed the presence of missile bases in Cuba.
  • In 1969, the New York Mets capped their miracle season by winning the World Series, defeating the Baltimore Orioles, 5-3, in Game 5 played at Shea Stadium.
  • In 2002, President George W. Bush signed a congressional resolution authorizing war against Iraq. The White House announced that North Korea had disclosed it had a nuclear weapons program.
  • In 1987, a 58-1/2-hour drama in Midland, Texas, ended happily as rescuers freed Jessica McClure, an 18-month-old girl trapped in a narrow, abandoned well.

Lunch and Business Program
                     Brenda Jackson introduced our speaker, Leticia De La Rosa, Project Facilitator and Director of Community Programs with Palo Alto College. Mission is "To inspire, empower, and educate our community for leadership and success." Leticia was raised on the southside of San Antonio and has been with Palo Alto for 10 years. She oversees the Adult Learning Program. In 2019 10,000 students were enrolled. Palo Alto offers early college high school whereby a high school student is able to get their GED with an associate's degree.

    Missing Pins and Badges
    Apparently no one was missing their pins or badges this week.
     
    Confessions and Brags
    Allyson Hamlin said that her dad's heart valve procedure was a success! He even attended the UTSA event on Thursday with his doctor!
    Fred Timmons shared that he made it through tax season.
    Ken Donoughue's phone rang so he paid a fine.
    Umbrella Time
    Derek Matthys, who owns the umbrella this month, was not at the meeting today so we didn't have Umbrella Time. Derek's winning bid for the umbrella goes towards his Paul Harris Fellowship.  He is also fine free as long as he owns the umbrella.

    A bunch of us like flipping pancakes every year to help this worthy cause!
     
    Oct 31 Morgan's Wonderland "More Delightful than Frightful" Mary Denton asked that we bring candy to next week's meeting for the kiddos going trick or treating and canned goods that will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. Either Mary or Ken Donoughue will make sure these will get to the event.  ***Remember that a background check is mandatory.*** See Mary or Ken for more details!
     
     
     
     
     
    Kathleen Gately of Kendall County Robotics is asking for volunteers for upcoming tournaments:
    Dec 7 at Lighthouse for the Blind
    Jan 4 at Lighthouse for the Blind
    Feb 4 at Texas A&M
    You might remember that Kathleen and her team of robotics experts made presentations to our club in the past. Mary Denton and her husband Pat McGuyer volunteered last year and are planning to volunteer again this year on Feb 4!

    Mary Denton announced that at the last Coffee Friday we had a good time at Alamo Biscuit Company last Friday. We meet on the second Friday of the month and the next one will be November 8 at 8 a.m.

    Come join us at the Flying Saucer on Huebner Rd at 5:30 p.m.  Derek Matthys says "the earlier the better!" Come join your friends and unwind on Oct 17!  Typically the third Thursday of the month.

    Morgan's Wonderland More Delightful than Frightful is October 31!  NOTICE! All participants MUST get a background check - forms are available each week at our meetings or if you wish, Mary Denton will send a copy to you via email.  Guests are asked to bring 4 non perishable food items to benefit the San Antonio Food Bank.     Dine Out for a Cause
    Nov 18 Northwest Rotary Club has joined up with Outback Steakhouse to make a difference!  20% of proceeds raised will be donated back to Rotary International and Northwest Rotary Foundation. 
     
     
    Ride to End Polio
    District Governor John Hutcherson will Ride to End Polio on November 23 in Tucson Arizona! He will join Rotarians from District 5500 and around the world as they challenge themselves to ride up to 100 miles to raise funds in the Ride to End Polio, part of El Tour de Tucson 2019.
