Prayer, Pledge and Visitors

The meeting began with the ringing of the bell by President Fred Timmons. Bruce Richter led us in a word of prayer and the pledge. President Fred introduced our speaker and guest: Our speaker today was Brenda Jackson who is a member of the board of directors of the San Antonio Division of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Fun fact: her professional title is Brenda Jackson, PhD, RN, Professor Emeritus, School of Nursing at UT Health San Antonio. Whew! She prefers to go by Brenda with her Rotary friends. We were happy to see our frequent guest and friend Dave Jower who is a member of the Northwest Rotary Club.

Fred shared with us his that he and Ken Donoughue attended the District 5840 Conference that was held here in San Antonio May 3rd & 4th. He said that both of them attended both days of the conference. He said that the Saturday event was "the best one!" Over $76,000 was raised for the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund through the cruise raffle. The winning ticket was drawn Saturday during the conference and Robert Hamilton, a member of the Rotary Club of San Antonio won the lucky ticket. Robert was the winner of TWO cruises since was the buyer and seller! The Rotary Exchange Students and Interact Club participated in the Saturday program. These students are our future leaders and they are very involved in volunteer activities, learning leadership skills while excelling in scholastic studies. New Member Induction

Without further adieu, our newest member, Matt Sheehan was inducted today! He is the Associate Director of Campus Operations at Galen College. Matt is new to San Antonio and wants to be "part of a caring organization." We're glad you are part of our club Matt! His sponsor is Ken Donoughue.

National Juice Slush Day – no rush, go slush
National Chocolate Chip Day – in 1937, Ruth Graves while working at the Toll House Inn decided to add a little chocolate to her cookies. Her cookies were a huge success and she signed a contract with the Nestle brand for her recipe which became Toll House Cookies.
National Nylon Stocking Day – Pantyhose were introduced in 1959.
Peace Officers Memorial Day – part of Police Week, paying tribute to local, State and Federal Law Enforcement Officers. Flags are flown at half- staff on this day in memory of those officers that have we have lost while in the line of duty.

1972 – Governor George Wallace was shot
1937 – Madeline Albright was born in the Czech Republic, she and her family fled to England in 1939 to escape the concentration camps. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1948. She became the first female Secretary of State for the U.S in 1997.
1900 – Frank Baum wrote a children’s book called “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, it was made into the movie, The Wizard of Oz in 1939 and has become the “Most Seen Film in Movie History”.

Fines and Confessions

Ken Ruiz lent a hand in collecting the fines this week! Since he couldn't find the usual butterfly net he used one of the FAST bags Brenda Jackson gave to us as part of her program. Apparently no one had any missing pins or badges. Destiny Mujica confessed that she missed the meeting last week because she was on vacation. She and her boyfriend went to Florida on a get away - you deserved it Destiny! Allyson Hamlin also missed the meeting last week because she had back-to-back meetings - your promotion really is keeping you busy Allyson! It was good to see you. Fred Timmons confessed he also missed last week's meeting due to a CPA conference. Richard Lounsbery shared that he took a trip recently to Denver - we're glad to have you back Richard!

Umbrella Time

There was no umbrella time today because James Daniel was absent from our meeting. James won the Umbrella during a rowdy auction last week! His winning bid goes towards his Paul Harris Fellowship. He will have the opportunity to speak during the meetings that he owns the umbrella and will be fine free! Hope to see you next week James!

Show Low Raffle

Our favorite Sommelier John Legris was on hand to share a little bit about the wines offered today! Losen-Bock Stanz Riesling Kabinett and Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. John shared that Chilean wines are excellent! He prefers Cabernet and Merlot. Bil Trodlier won the opportunity to draw the 2 of clubs from the deck to win the $475 pot. He drew the ten of diamonds and felt like a winner when he took home the Frontera Merlot. Gloria Richter owned the second ticket drawn and chose the Riesling Kabinett.

Club Lunch and Business Program

Brenda Jackson was our speaker today for the American Stroke Association. May is stroke month and she taught us how to recognize a stroke and get help. The F.A.S.T. system: Face drooping Arm weakness Speech difficulty Time to call 911

A stroke is a brain attack. Signs of aneurysm: crashing headache, trouble with balance (vertigo) migraine headaches. This is more common in women due to hormonal changes. Foods thought to trigger migraine headaches: red tint such as in red wine, foods in nightshade family: potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers. Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the U.S. Regarding diet, eggs are no longer thought to cause high cholesterol. Recommended decrease salt consumption, decreased use of canned and processed foods, no preservatives. Some ethnicities seem to have an increased risk of stroke. For more information go to the American Stroke Association website HERE! Thank you Brenda for speaking to us and alerting us to early warning signs of stroke. As a token of our appreciation we will donate a book in Brenda's honor to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library.

Coffee Friday

Why drink (coffee) alone when you can pal around with your friends?? Typically the second Friday of the month. We welcome your input! Is there a day/time better for you? PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!!!!

The Outback Steakhouse is the new place for libations and munchies - typically the third Thursday of the month. Meeting time seems to be when everyone gets there - between 5:30 & 6:30? Come join your friends and unwind on June 20!

Notice to Members

Our club objective is to have an official list of members for the July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 Rotary year to be completed by Wednesday June 12, 2019

The membership due amount for the coming year is $175 per member
Members are asked to complete one of the following two payment options with Treasurer Stuart Dudley on or before Wednesday, June 12, 2019
- Pay the $175 amount to Stuart on or before 6-12-19
- Discuss and communicate a request to pay the $175 in 2 monthly installments of $100 payment paid by 6-12-19 and $75 paid by 7-10-19

Members who make no payments by 6-12-19 will be deleted from our club's membership for the coming year on June 15, 2019 and can be rejoined after July 1 with full due payment

District 5840 News

Register today for the 2019-2020 District 5840 District Governor and Officers Installation. This event will celebrate our outgoing District Governor, Kathy Hubbard, and install our incoming District Governor, John Hutcherson, the District Governor Elect, Xavier Toson, and the District Governor Nominee, Kristy Vandenberg.

Happy Hour from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. with the Induction of Officers at 6:00 p.m.
A dinner buffet will open at 6:15 p.m.
