Jon Rhoades, and baby Joslyn Jessie Rhoades, both guests of Destiny Mujica. This is baby Joslyn's first Rotary meeting - it won't be her last! (Secretary Mary chose purple for this week's bulletin - it's Joslyn's favorite color!)

President Rick provided the club announcements:

President Rick asked for a report on the last Coffee Friday and the last Happy Hour. Secretary Mary Denton said that Bruce Richter, her husband Pat McGuyer and she attended. They all had fun and she invites everyone to come to the next one! At the Happy Hour last month Secretary Mary said they tried out a new place, Luce Restaurant at Huebner on the Strand. Mary said that Veronica Ruse, husband Pat and she had good conversation and enjoyed yummy hors d'oeuvres. They suspected the low turnout was due to holiday activities.

** Be Kind to Rotary Secretary Day:  Happy Hours are usually the third Thursday of the month and Coffee Fridays are usually the second Friday of the month. Please report any discrepancies in this newsletter so corrections can be made.

Past President Fred Timmons, who is never at a loss for funnies, shared this one:

Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair and says, "Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?" he asks. "Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?" "Sure" "Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks. "No, I can remember it." "Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?" He says, "I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries." "I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?" she asks. Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice Cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!" Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment. "Where's my toast?"

President Rick challenged us with "Who have you invited to Rotary?"

Rick Rhodes introduced our speaker:  Dr. Federico Garcia. Dr. Garcia is a member of Club Rotario Coronado Binacional District 4110 in Mexico. He spoke to us about their projects for providing drinking water for schools. These serve low economic neighborhoods. There have been cases of low school performance due to dehydration. Students have a tendency to drink too many sodas due to poor drinking water. The club works with other clubs and grants from the USA. Each school makes a commitment to maintain the system. The entire system for 700 users costs about $6,000. To maintain the system, the cost is around $500 per year. They have 3 more projects planned. Go to their website to find out more HERE!

Thank you Dr. Garcia for speaking to our club today!

As is our custom, a book will be donated in Dr. Garcia's honor to the Locke Hill Elementary School Library.

Thank you Fred Timmons for your book donation.

At our last meeting Past President Fred Timmons won the bid for the umbrella. He announced that he won with his bid of $75 but made his donation $100. His donation goes towards his Paul Harris Fellowship. Today he said "in this club we all have different vocations." He is a CPA and knows the complex and different tax laws. Call him for more information or for an appointment.

Four Way Test or Show Low Drawing?
President Rick asked us to all join him with the Four Way Test.  To stem the tide of an unruly mob, he changed his mind and decided to have the the Show Low Drawing!  Today's pot is $1,200 and there are only two cards left in the deck!  Secretary Mary Denton inventoried the cards and confirmed that there was in fact only one two of clubs card remaining.  No funny business will be tolerated here!  Our intrepid Sommelier John Legris introduced the wines for today:  Muscat Canelli, a white wine from Sister Creek Vineyards and Temranillo, a red wine from Spain. Treasurer Stuart Dudley owned the first ticket drawn.  It turned out to be his lucky day because he drew the 2 of clubs!  Destiny Mujica owned the second ticket drawn and took home one of the bottles of wine - which one, nobody knows. We were all distracted when some of the club members hoisted Stuart on their shoulders as he took a victory lap around the room....

Thank you Bruce Richter for contributing wine for the month of January.
Big Check Presentation
President Rick presented Ramon Gonzales of Vet Strong with the donation from out club. Thank you for your service, Mr. Gonzales and for what you are doing to help our vets!
