Prayer, Pledge and Visitors
The meeting began with the ringing of the bell by President Fred Timmons.  Joe Montagna led us in a word of prayer and the pledge.  Bruce Richter observed that our guests from Girl Scouts US had no problem reciting the Texas Pledge by heart!

President Fred introduced our speakers and guests:
Kris Richter, son of Bruce & Gloria Richter who is a member of the Terry McGregor Rotary Club in North Carolina
Melissa Caplinger, Leader of Girl Scouts Troop 43 and three members of the Troup.
Matthew Sheehan, Campus Director of Galen College, guest of Ken Donoughue. Matthew is a prospective member for our Club.

President Fred shared some sad news: Long time Oak Hills Rotarian Ted Harwood passed away Sunday night. The family plans to have a private service on their ranch. Members of our Club shared fond memories of Ted.  He and his business partner Don Hill, local Veterinarians, were key to the wildly successful Shrimp Fest. They would fry fish and boil shrimp through the night before to prepare for the event.

Another of our Rotarian members, Chuck Steinmetz had a severe stroke Tuesday and is in the hospital. Please keep Chuck and his wife Jackie in your prayers. Chuck was very involved in the Oak Hills and Med Center Rotary Clubs for many years prior to having health issues.

Humor from President Fred
These are quotes from the old game show Hollywood Squares:
Host: "If you're going to make a parachute jump, at least how high should you be?"
Charley Weaver: "Three days of steady drinking should do it."
Host: "You've been having trouble going to sleep. Are you probably a man or a woman?"
Don Knotts: "That's what's been keeping me awake."
Host: "According to Cosmopolitan, if you meet a stranger at a party and you think that he is attractive, is it okay to come right out and ask him if he's married?"
Rose Marie: "No, wait until morning."
Host: "According to Ann Landers, is there anything wrong with getting into the habit of kissing a lot of people?"
Charley Weaver: "It got me out of the army."

Pass the Hat goes to: Girl Scouts of America

Valentine Day Trivia

President Fred shared some Valentine's Day trivia:
The first mass produced Valentine was in 1947.
Approximately 190 million Valentines are mailed each year.
Over half mailed are for others than husband and wife
Average spending for Valentine's Day has increased every year
"All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt." Charles Schultz

President Fred said, "this is a great time to tell someone that you cherish them."
Show Low Raffle
President Fred Timmons won the opportunity to draw the 2 of Clubs to win the $150 pot. Unfortunately he drew the Six of Clubs and took home a bottle of white wine.

Ken Ruiz owned the second ticket drawn and took home a bottle of red wine.

Rick Tarbell is providing the wine this month - thanks Rick!
Fines and Confessions
Rick Tarbell confessed that he was missing his pin.
Bruce and Gloria Richter are celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary. Congratulations!
Bruce shared that he and Gloria awarded their Paul Harris Fellow pin to their son Kris. Their daughter and granddaughter also have Paul Harris Fellow pins. Contributions to the Paul Harris Foundation goes directly to Rotary International and towards their effort to end diseases such polio on a world wide scale. For every $1 Rotary commits to Polio eradication the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has committed $2.
Umbrella Time
Ken Ruiz owns the umbrella for January and February.  Ken was grateful to family and friends who shared the time with him last meeting for his induction into the Club. This was a meaningful time for him to return to the original Club where his Rotary life began. He gave our guest today, Matt Sheehan, an "End Polio Now" tile. He explained the focus and effort that Rotary Internal has to end polio worldwide.

Remembering Ted Harwood
Ken reminisced about Rotarian and friend Ted Harwood. Ted and his business partner Dan Hill were Veterinarians. Ken was 24 years old when he joined Oak Hills Rotary. Ted made fun of Ken's New York accent and Ken took his kidding in stride. Ken shared the good time he and his kid brother had when Ted's business partner took them fishing. Someone shared, "Ted was an Aggie". Bil Trodlier shared, "Ted was a good guy." Fred shared that "Ted was soft spoken." Joe said, "Ted was a rancher." Ted is leaving a legacy in the history of our Club - so many friendships - and will long be remembered.  We are forever grateful.
Club Lunch and Business Program
Girl Scout Troop 43 was on hand today selling cookies!  This unique Troop consists of 15 homeschooled girls and they meet at the Girl Scout Headquarters. Girl Scouts in the US helps girls build confidence and character. When asked what were their favorite activities they listed: A trip the Snake Farm, Volunteering at the Food Bank, the Food Drive at HEB where they helped pack 995 bags with 496 lbs of food.  They also took a night trip to the San Antonio Zoo. Cookie sales help support the local counsel, help earn trips to camp and help support STEM Workshops. The girls work on badges and learn about managing money. These girls are cookie experts! In the fall the girls sell nuts and candy. The girls reported that the #1 cookie sold is Thin Mints. Troop Leader Melissa Caplinger led the girls in the:
